Smokefree Legislation

Smoking is the single biggest cause of preventable illness and death in the UK. 

From 1 July 2007, it became illegal to smoke in enclosed public places, workplaces, public vehicles and work vehicles in England. The smokefree law was introduced to protect employees and the public from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

The Environmental Health department enforces this legislation.

The owners and managers of premises covered by the law are required to uphold the law and to take reasonable steps to ensure compliance.
