The OPAL group runs from the Greeno Community Centre in Shepperton. It is for older people who have some additional support needs, or who would struggle to manage if they were alone in one of our centres. This can include problems with mobility, memory loss, disability, sight or hearing loss.
OPAL members in Spelthorne can be transported to and from home by Opal minibus. A hot two-course lunch is available along with snacks and refreshments during the day. Various activities such as games, quizzes, puzzles, chair exercise, day-trips and crafts take place each day, along with a lot of chatting and giggles, which are all designed to keep the brain active and to enable socialisation with others.
OPAL is a referral in service, not a drop in. We can take up to 25 people per day and it is staffed by six support workers. There is a daily charge to attend the group with transport and lunch as additional costs, which can be met by the client themselves if they are self-funders, or as part of an adult social care package, via adult social care.
For more information, on activities and costs please call the OPAL Manager, Zoe Buck, on 01932 246173 or email Opal@Spelthorne.gov.uk.
Alternatively, please contact the Greeno Centre on 01932 246173.
You are welcome to join OPAL if you are outside of the Borough but will need to arrange your own transport to and from the centre.
For an Adult Social Care assessment please call 01932 795292 to make a referral if you will need to include the group costs in a package of care.
Membership costs
To join one of our community centres, membership is £19 a year for those who live in Spelthorne and £30 a year for those who live outside the Borough (membership runs 1st April one year to 31st March the following year). To become a member simply go to your nearest centre and complete a form. We are able to take cash or cheques. We hope to have card payments available in the near future.
Should you need to use community transport, this is available to Spelride members subject to availability. If you will be using community transport to attend the centres, it is more helpful to make a joint applications (centres and Spelride) as this is cheaper than making individual applications. Joint membership £30, Spelride only £24.
