Violence Against Women And Girls

Spelthorne Safer Stronger Partnership understand that VAWG is both a form of discrimination and a violation of human rights. Locally we have adopted the Home Office and United Nations Declaration on Elimination of Violence against Women's definition:

'Any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women [or girls], including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty' (1993, Article 1)2

This definition incorporates many different forms of abuse, including the following:

  • Domestic Abuse
  • Sexual Violence
  • Stalking
  • Coercive and Controlling behaviour
  • Trafficking for sexual exploitation
  • Prostitution
  • Female Genital Mutilation
  • Forced Marriage and Honour Based Violence
