Clinical waste collections

Collections 

We collect clinical waste/sharp boxes on Thursdays, however, we do not collect yellow bags. To arrange a collection of your clinical waste/sharps box, please contact Neighbourhood Services before noon on Wednesday. Please note that if your sharps' container is not locked when we come to collect, it will not be taken.

Residents must have a minimum of two boxes and a maximum of four unless it is a one off collection following treatment. 

Book a clinical waste collection

Non-infectious items such as used dressings, bandages, swabs etc should be disposed of in your general rubbish bin.

Infectious or hazardous waste can be collected as clinical waste and must be presented in an orange bag, which you can obtain from your doctor or district nurse.

Hygiene waste

Items such as sanitary products, incontinence pads, stoma bags, catheter waste, home dialysis waste (empty saline or glucose IV bags and tubing), 'peg' or stomach feeding equipment that are not contaminated with infectious materials and/or cytotoxic or cytostatic type drugs are not considered clinical waste. They can be double wrapped and disposed of with your general rubbish; they do not need to be collected separately.

Sharps

This is the general term for syringes, needles and other sharp instruments. Under no circumstances should these be disposed of with your general rubbish. Even if they are not contaminated or used they should be placed in special sharps boxes and collected separately.

Please make sure that all sharps boxes are locked before putting them outside for collection.

Medicines

Take your unwanted and out-of-date medicines to your local pharmacy; do not put them in your normal rubbish bin.

Empty non contaminated packaging and containers for medicines and other medical products can be placed in household recycling bins. These may include cardboard boxes, paper instructions and clean plastic bottles.
