Support with council tax following a bereavement

We understand that losing someone close to you is an incredibly difficult time, and dealing with practical matters can feel overwhelming. We’re here to help make things as straightforward as possible.

If your partner has passed away and you are now the only adult living in your home, you may be entitled to a 25% reduction on your Council Tax through the Single Person Discount.

If the person who has passed away lived alone, please contact us and provide the following details so we can update our records:

  • Date of death
  • Name and address of the executors or solicitors handling the estate
  • Whether the property was owned by the deceased (and now forms part of the estate) or rented
    • If rented, please include the tenancy end date and the name and address of the landlord

If the property is part of the deceased’s estate and remains unoccupied, it may be exempt from Council Tax until probate is granted. After probate, an exemption can continue for up to six months, provided the property remains unoccupied and ownership has not changed.
