Stanwell Hotel update and Extraordinary Council meeting

News update
On the evening of Tuesday 26 August, Councillor Joanne Sexton, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, attended a meeting of the Stanwell Village Residents Group. During the meeting residents were provided with an update on the ongoing situation at the Stanwell Hotel.

A number of questions and requests for clarification were raised by residents, which the Council has committed to reviewing and responding to. These include:

  • confirmation of the number of residents currently living at the hotel
  • a request for the Council to seek permission from the Home Office to visit the interior of the hotel
  • concerns about cannabis use in and around the hotel grounds
  • ongoing concerns regarding children's safety, return to school and the level of police presence in the area
  • a clarification letter sent to Lincoln Jopp regarding his correspondence on the 29 July
  • any additional support the Council can provide local families living in the village and those residing in the hotel

Residents also asked Cllr Sexton for an update on the possibility of pursuing legal action to obtain an injunction against the hotel. In response, she stated:

"I can confirm that preliminary legal advice has been obtained. The early indication is that, unlike the situation in Epping Forest, an injunction is legally closed as an option for Spelthorne.

"At Epping Forest, the council had a documented history of attempted planning enforcement action from the early days of asylum seekers being housed there. By contrast, in Spelthorne, we welcomed our cohort of asylum seekers, which included families and single women.

"Therefore, all potential planning enforcement measures must be fully explored before an injunction can be considered.

"We are currently awaiting a formal response from the Home Office, which will help determine our next steps. Please be assured that the Council is committed to exploring every available option to achieve the best outcome for the community."

An Extraordinary Council meeting has been scheduled for Thursday 4 September at 7pm. The agenda is available to view on the Council's website: Agenda for Council on Thursday, 4 September 2025, 7.00 pm - Spelthorne Borough Council
