Spelthorne Committed To Equality

It should be remembered that, on 28 August 1963, there was a March on Washington, USA attended by 250,000 people, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his "I Have a Dream" speech. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter and Me Too movements have highlighted how much work society still has to do to be truly equal and to embrace diversity.

From Spelthorne's perspective, our aim is to challenge discrimination, provide strong leadership to promote equality of opportunity, improve access to services and foster positive relations, this is the pledge of our equalities plan. We are committed to providing services in a fair and accessible way to all members of the community and to ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities to work with the council, irrespective of:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation
