Information about the Staines By-Election taking place on Thursday 16 October 2025

If you have not registered or have moved you will need to register prior to the election. The deadline to register is Tuesday 30 September 2025 and should be made via www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. However you may be required to provide documentary evidence to support your application so please register in good time.
Every registered elector in Spelthorne who is eligible to vote in this election will be sent a poll card confirming which method of voting they have in place, eg by postal vote, by proxy or in person at the polling station. These pollcards will be sent soon. Please check the details and let us know of any problems as soon as you receive it.
There are three ways to vote, in person at the polling station, by post or using a proxy voter. For further information and application forms visit the Electoral Commission website.
Polling stations will be open from 7am - 10pm on Thursday 16 October 2025. Details of your polling station can be found on your poll card or on Customer Portal(opens new window). Please check carefully where your polling station is located as it may have changed since you last voted.
Applications can be made for a single election, for a specified period or permanently. You can apply for a postal vote at any time until 5pm on Wednesday 1 October 2025. The deadline for making changes to or cancelling existing arrangements is also 5pm on Wednesday 1 October 2025. Poll cards will be sent out next week, week commencing 8 September 2025 and postal votes will be sent out around 24th September after the Statement of Persons Nominated is published. Postal packs for late postal vote applications will be sent later so please ensure you apply as early as possible to enable us to get your ballot papers to you when required.
Completed postal votes need to be returned by 10pm on Thursday 16 October 2025. Please note that we do not accept electronic signatures on the application form. If you miss the post you can hand your completed postal vote into your polling station or the Council Offices at Knowle Green. Any postal votes placed in the Royal Mail posting box on polling day, will not be counted.
This means appointing someone to vote on your behalf at your polling station.
You can apply for a proxy vote at any time until 5pm Wednesday 8 October 2025. You will need to tell the person you have appointed as your proxy which candidates you wish to vote for once the candidates' details have been made available. Your proxy must be registered and eligible to vote in these elections.
